Salute, New York Harbor, August 1977
The John D. McKeon, a New York City fireboat, came out to greet the New York Press Photographers annual boat ride in New York Harbor in August 1977, unleashing five torrents of spray against the backdrop of the sunset-splashed twin towers. This photograph won Honorable Mention in a Time magazine photo contest, and I received appreciative letters and print orders from both the builder of the boat and the associate architect of the World Trade Center. This has always been among my most popular photographs, although it was a departure from my normal focus of people and animals.
